Applications of Montage - Analyzing Data
Our customers have exploited the capabilities of Montage in generating scientific products, underpinning quality assurance of data products, deploying data access services, analyzing data, and in deriving educational and public outreach products.
Beaton et al (2006) have computed a mosaic of M31 in the 2MASS J, H and K bands. Rectification of the background radiation to a common level allowed them to verify that the bulge of M31 has a boxy shape characteristic of a bar. This shape was overwhelmed by airglow in the 2MASS survey images. Their analysis confirmed that M31 is a barred spiral.
The Spitzer Space Telescope IRAC data are a powerful probe of the global history of star formation in the Galaxy, and of the energetics of star formation regions and of the interstellar medium. The mosaics delivered by GLIMPSE project have been cited in the discovery of recent star formation in giant HII regions (Whitney et al. 2004), in the study of the wavelength dependence of interstellar extinction from 1.25 &mico;m to 8.0 µm (Indebetouw et al. 2004), in the discover of new planetary nebulae (Cohen et al 2004), in the discovery of low Galactic latitude globular cluster (Kobulnicky et al. 2005) and in the possible identification of linearly propagating star formation in the Jellyfish nebula (Mercer et al. 2005).
